This piece pretty much makes my day every time I look at it. It is refreshing and inspiring to see a realistic approach to Team Gai (and Naruto in general). This fandom is very much stylized and to see a piece like this is a very rare treat indeed.
I feel that you've done a very good job. The characters' personalities are very obvious and well-presented, and I do enjoy the subtle differences in the structures of their faces. I love the rough way it was painted, though I can't say for sure why. The colors are gorgeous and the simple background really fits.
It's a classic team portrait, not so different from any other piece I've seen. However, this is different in it is not just a re-drawing of the Team 7 picture given in the manga, changed to depict a different team. I'm particularly enthralled with Neji's expression, the colors and wrinkles on Tenten's shirt (particularly those buttons~) and the details in Lee's eyes. Very nice, very nice indeed.
Like the other critique, the main problem I see lies with Gai. Drawing 40-going-on-21 is difficult and it shows. Perhaps you were trying a bit too hard to accent his nose- one of his more obvious features? He does look very young, but I understand the difficulty of making a 30-something year old man look 'youthful' while still looking his age.
Another problem I'm having is distinguishing what's what above Tenten's shoulder (by that, I mean my right). I can see where her shoulder slopes down, but I can't tell whose arm that is supposed to be. Both that and the hand on Neji's head appear to be Lee's arm, but that's impossible. Perhaps it's just me and there's something else I'm not considering.
The headbands look a little crooked, a little messy, but overall alright and still effective. Minor issue.
Again, I can't state how much I enjoy this piece. I would not take the time out of my day to critique it if I didn't see something special. I enjoy the unique light it paints my favorite team in and it's beautiful. I'd like to see more.
This is a very good piece, now that I've said that let's break it down.
Vision is a clear strong asset on this work, you can clearly see what the artist wanted to show us. A simple more human version of this very stylistic anime/manga characters.
Originality is obviously the weakest point on this piece because it ain't really nothing new, since it's fan art. So there's nothing to really point out, apart from the artist personal style, hence 3 stars.
Technique is really top notch on this piece. The shading and line flow really makes this piece stand out. It's also clear that the artist really went back and forth with the background and in the end it turned out great, the depth on the image is well done too, colors are easy for the eye. Everything turned out good.
Impact is the best asset on this piece, just as a little thumbnail this pops out a lot when in comparation to other Naruto works, why? Because the style is diferent.
My only strong aka bad critique on this piece is Gai, doesn't look like Gai at all. Even if humanized, I believe it's because Gai here looks younger then Neji for example. Apart from this... it's all good and great.
I aprove this message lol! Good job, two thumbs up.
